We are delighted to announce that our master’s student Nicholas has been awarded a fellowship for the 2024-2025 Academic year. The HBHL (Healthy Brains Healthy Lives) aims to fund interdisciplinary neuroscience projects to advance discoveries and accelerate innovation. He earned this prestigious award under the category of Mechanistic Models for Neurodegenerative Disorders.
On a lovely summer day, we had a lab BBQ outside. A big thank you to our amazing grill expert and all lab members who made it such a fun time!
Nick obtained the CRBS (Centre de Recherche en Biologie Structurale) masters Studentship. The CRBS is a McGill organization dedicated to advancing structural biology research using biophysical equipment and techniques. He obtained this award for his research on protein amyloid fibrils.
Lia Paim and Tatiana Lyalina are winners of CRBS Scientific Image Contest in the Microscopic Marvels and Biological Landscapes categories. Let’s have a look at a kaleidoscopic dance of microtubules and muddy thinking together!

We totally got eclipsed!
I’m thrilled to share my latest research from the @Bechstedtlab at @McGill_ACB!

Here we show that the spindle protein CKAP2 is a #microtubule growth factor in cells and contributes to accurate cell division.

Much result, many excitement!
Incredible science in a stunning location! Shoutout to Lia Paim for doing the lab's heavy lifting- presenting a talk and poster.

And thousand thanks to the BrouhardLab to put up with us for that long!!
Sanni presents why microtubules are the coolest thing about the cell.
See you on the other side ;)
Shout out to reviewers 1 and 2 for realizing the significance of a TIRF microscope for a
microtubule lab :)

Once a year Cell Biology at McGill takes over Mont St. Gabriel, QC for their Annual retreat. This year Sanni talked about the hottest projects in the lab.
Protocol: 1 1/2 oz Gin, 1/2 oz Campari, 1/2 Simple Sirup, 1 Egg White.
Dry shake 10 sec,
add ice - shake 10 sec
Our love for Pho and our (future) lab neighbours from the BuiLab had us Bixi-out to Pho Tai Ho for delicious lunch. Photo credit Sky.
We love diversity! Every May, we love to sample the diversity of beers the world has to offer during the Mondiale de la bière. This year we optimized the glass size vs sample volume equation. The night was rounded out by Chinese dinner thanks to our ambitous Chinatown guide Stone.
The lab is getting its feet wet. Gabe and Tom start as RAs for the summer. Sanni found out that recruiting Canadians is really hard and includes the risk for black eyes, broken wrists, and concussions.
To celebrate the looming incarnation of the BechstedtLab, Tom and Sanni went to SF to explore the latest and greatest research in Cell Biology and to meet the best scientists in the world. Also a great distraction from writing CFI grants….
